As a Jedi, Count Dooku wasn't keen to follow the Jedi code to the letter but it made him a great teacher to his Padawan Qui-Gon in teaching him what's right and wrong whether it's per the code. Dooku's faith in the order and the Republic shifted after a mission to rescue a senator's son turned out to be more a rescue of the planet's people from its corrupt leader. With his faith shaken in the order he secretly became the apprentice of the dark lord Darth Sidious, who manipulated Dooku to the dark side for what Dooku believed was the betterment of the Republic.
